Book Report #1: All the Way Home

I just finished All the Way Home by Ann Tatlock.  It starts in Los Angeles a few years before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Two little girls–Augie, who is white, and Sunny, who is Japanese-American– become friends.  The first half of the book focuses on their growing friendship and the effect that World War II has on it.  The second half of the book finds Augie grown up and involved in Mississippi civil rights issues in the 1960s.
I found this book to have an enjoyable but slow beginning.  It was engaging, but didn’t have the engrossing quality of a story you can’t put down.  However, after the story reached December 7, 1941, I was engrossed.  As a whole story, it was quite a ride, and well worth reading.
So…66 more books to go?  🙂
